No. 8 Salt Lake powers through USU Eastern in Friday doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 19, 2019) - Each successive victory in the 2019 season has brought the No. 8 Salt Lake Community College softball team that much closer to the Scenic West regular-season title they crave.

Entering a four-game series with in-state rival USU Eastern, the Bruins had an eight-game lead in the standings with just three series remaining in the regular season. SLCC did much to improve their odds of reclaiming the Scenic West crown Friday, sweeping the Eagles in Price by scores of 6-1 in game one and 16-3 in game two. The wins improve Salt Lake's overall record to 34-6 and their record in the Scenic West Athletic Conference to 26-4.

The two programs will play a doubleheader on Saturday. The day's first game will begin at 12:00 p.m.

Salt Lake 6, USU Eastern 1: Extra-base hits powered the Bruins to the game one victory.

An early triple gave SLCC a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Mallory Barber hit a double in the third inning and was eventually brought home by Tarni Stepto to extend the Salt Lake lead to 2-0. Kim Taylor hit a solo home run in the fourth inning before a Paige Reynolds RBI single and a Barber RBI double extended the lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning. Barber had an additional RBI double in the seventh inning.

Besides her hitting prowess, Stepto pitched a complete-game victory in the circle, allowing just one run in seven innings. She struck out six batters in the win.

Salt Lake 16, USU Eastern 3: A Breah Ava grand-slam home run lifted Salt Lake to the doubleheader sweep and a run-rule victory.

Ava hit a grand-slam and an RBI single in the fourth inning, eventually helping the Bruins to a 14-2 lead. Paige Reynolds started the scoring a two-run single in the second inning. Ava also hit an RBI triple in the second inning.

Brook Carter earned the pitching win for Salt Lake, consistently minimizing the USU Eastern scoring opportunities.
