Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 13, 2019) - The No. 10 Salt Lake Community College softball team appears that they are hitting their groove at the right time.
The Bruins picked up two impressive wins over the College of Southern Idaho Saturday, earning the doubleheader sweep. SLCC picked up an 8-0 win in game one before powering to a 17-5 victory in game two. The wins boosted Salt Lake's overall record to 30-6 overall and 22-4 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Salt Lake and Southern Idaho will play a doubleheader on Sunday at Norma Carr Field. The day's first game will start at 12:00 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.slccbruins.com.
Salt Lake 8, Southern Idaho 0: A consistent offensive attack pushed the Bruins to a run-rule victory.
Rylee Harris's sacrifice-fly RBI in the first inning got SLCC on the board, starting the team's offense.
Mallory Barber hit a solo home run in the second inning as the Bruins took a 2-0 lead. That home run proved to be a harbinger of things to come as Barber hit her second home run in the fourth inning, followed by
Whitnee Alexander's two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Barber and
Tarni Stepto both finished with two hits, while Barber and Alexander had two RBI's. Stepto earned the pitching victory, striking out nine while throwing five scoreless innings.
Salt Lake 17, Southern Idaho 5: The second fast-start of the day lifted SLCC to the impressive victory.
The Bruins held an 8-1 lead after the second inning, earning an advantage they would never surrender.
Savanna Montoya and
Mackenzy Richins both hit two-run home runs in the inning, capping off a seven-run inning. Salt Lake scored three runs in the third inning and then six runs in the fourth inning, punctuated by a three-run Richins home run.
Richins was the offensive MVP of the game, going 3-of-4 with 6 RBI's.
Brook Carter pitched 4.1 innings to earn the win, striking out seven batters along the way.
