Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 9, 2019) - The No. 4 Salt Lake Community College softball team wasn't pleased with its performance in Friday's doubleheader at Southern Idaho, a performance they wanted to follow up differently Saturday.
SLCC was certainly different in Saturday's doubleheader, utilizing a powerful offensive attack to roll to a doubleheader sweep over the Golden Eagles, earning 14-3 and 19-1 wins to finish a series split with Southern Idaho. The wins lift Salt Lake's overall record to 14-4 and 6-2 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Salt Lake will host USU Eastern in a Scenic West series next weekend at Norma Carr Field. The two teams will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
Salt Lake 14, Southern Idaho 3: The Bruins scored early and often to leave no doubt in game three of the series.
Mallory Barber hit a solo home run in the first inning, setting the tone in a game that featured double-digit hits for Salt Lake. Tied 1-1 in the second inning, the Bruins scored three runs to take a lead they would never relinquish. Leading 9-3 in the sixth inning, Salt Lake scored two runs on a Barber walk to push their run-total to double digits.Â
The seventh inning started off strong for Salt Lake as
Tarni Stepto hit a solo home run, followed up by
Whitnee Alexander RBI double. Leading 14-3 in the bottom half of the inning,
Brook Carter struck out the final batter to close out a Bruin victory.
Kierstyn Ketchell picked up the victory, moving to 8-0 on the season.
Salt Lake 19, Southern Idaho 1: Another SLCC offensive domination gave the Bruins the doubleheader sweep and the series split.
Tarni Stepto's solo home run in the first inning again set the tone for the Bruins, with
Savanna Montoya's grand slam in the second inning giving Salt Lake a 5-0 lead after two innings. With snow beginning to fall after the early innings,
Breah Ava and
Dayna Hokanson both went yard to lift Salt Lake's lead to 14-0 after the top of the third inning.
The game ended by run-rule in the fifth inning, with Carter earning the victory on a complete game where she allowed one run and surrendered just two hits.
