No. 10 SLCC Softball sweeps USU Eastern, maintains momentum

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 15, 2019) - Spring is in the air around Salt Lake City and the temperatures aren't the only thing warming in the area.

The No. 10 Salt Lake Community College softball program is gaining momentum by the day, starting their run through the Scenic West Athletic Conference at 6-2. The Bruins sustained that momentum through the first doubleheader of a four-game series with USU Eastern, earning two wins by scores of 12-4 and 10-2 to move to 8-2 in league play and 16-4 overall. 

Salt Lake continued its strong offensive start to the season, powering to a () advantage in runs-scored. SLCC's pitching staff also maintained their early excellence, allowing just () runs in the doubleheader sweep.

The Bruins and USU Eastern will play two more games on Saturday, with the first game of the doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. The games will be played at Norma Carr Field,  with live stats on www.slccbruins.com.

Salt Lake 12, USU Eastern 4: After a slow start, the Bruins utilized the long ball to power to the victory.

SLCC scored two runs in the first inning to overcome an early deficit, with a Breah Ava RBI single start Salt Lake's offense. Mackenzy Richins opened the game wide-open in the third inning with a grand-slam home run, followed up by an Ava home run to give the Bruins a 7-2 lead in the fourth inning. SLCC had one more home run in the sixth inning as Kim Taylor hit a two-run bomb.

Salt Lake ended the game on a run-rule with a Rylee Harris sacrifice-fly RBI.

Salt Lake 10, USU Eastern 2: An early USU Eastern lead did nothing to deter SLCC as the Bruins powered on to the win.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, a Breah Ava RBI double got Salt Lake on the board and Richins added to the tally with a two-RBI double to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead. SLCC wouldn't trail again as Arienn Ackerman hit a home run in the third inning to give Salt Lake total control.

Richins finished 3-of-4 at the plate, with Ackerman picking up 3 RBI's. Mia Cullimore pitched the win for Salt Lake, throwing a complete game.
