Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 2, 2019) -Â Â A night after opening the 2019 season with a strong victory, the No. 13 Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team picked up another impressive win in the Arizona desert.
Â
SLCC moved to 2-0 on the young season with an 80-76Â win over Central Arizona College. Salt Lake had a big lead early before having to make a few clutch plays late to earn the victory.
SLCC coach
Kyle Taylor said the win showed his team's resilience.Â
"We showed a lot of grit and resolve after giving away a double digit lead in the second half," he said. "I'm proud of the way our team fought and stayed together and kept fighting. Central Arizona played really well and made a ton of big shots. It was a good test for us early in the year."
The Bruins led 45-36 at halftime, after leading by as many as 13 points in the first half. Central Arizona strongly responded in the second half, playing a mixture of strong offense and suffocating defense. SLCC was up by 5 points with 25 seconds left. Shooting free throws, the Bruins missed the shot and Central Arizona responded with a made 3. In a quick turn-of-events, Salt Lake turned the ball over on the inbounds before the Bruins stole the Central Arizona inbounds pass and
Asa McCord made a pair of free throws to finish the game.
McCord had a monster game, finishing with 20 points and going 4-of-4 at the free throw line.
Spencer Johnson had 17 points while
Justice Hill had 14 points.
Tutu Majok finished with 11 points. Â
"
Justice Hill controlled the tempo of the game the final 8 minutes, which was really good to see," Taylor said. "
Asa McCord made big play after big play, including the two clutch FT's at the end. He and
Tutu Majok rebounded the ball extremely well."
Â
Salt Lake will host next weekend's Region 9/18 Challenge tourney inside the Lifetime Activities Center. The Bruins will host Casper College on Friday at 6:00 p.m.Â
