Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 26, 2019) - Another sunny day in Las Vegas ended with more sunny feelings for the No. 14 Salt Lake Community College softball program.
The Bruins swept a doubleheader to finish the Southern Nevada tournament at 5-0, earning an 11-5 victory over Yavapai College and a 4-3 victory over No. 9 Eastern Arizona. SLCC also went 3-0 in games on Friday.
Salt Lake will play next in a tournament in Florida, starting with a doubleheader against Chipola College on February 7.Â
Salt Lake 11, Yavapai 5: SLCC utilized a variety of different scoring tools in another impressive offensive performance.
Salt Lake held a 2-0 lead after the first inning, thanks to some RBI walks from
Tarni Stepto and
Mallory Barber. Then, in the top of the third inning,
Dayna Hokanson led off with a walk with Stepto then hitting a two-run home run to give Salt Lake a 4-0 lead.
Paige Reynolds added an RBI single on a bunt in the fifth inning.Â
Mia Cullimore earned the victory in the circle, with
Kierstyn Ketchell picking up the save.Â
Salt Lake 4, Eastern Arizona 3: In a back-and-forth contest between two of the best teams on the West Coast, Salt Lake earned the victory with timely hitting and pitching.
Tarni Stepto's go-ahead home run in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie, lifting Salt Lake to the victory. Power served SLCC well, with a
Kim Taylor solo shot in the third inning tying the game at 3-3. Salt Lake led 2-0 after the first inning thanks to a Stepto RBI single that started the scoring.
Kierstyn Ketchell started the game for Salt Lake, picking up three strikeouts before leaving for
Brook Carter. With a narrow lead in the seventh inning, Carter struck out the first batter and ultimately struck out the final batter, preserving the narrow SLCC victory.Â
