Box Score 3 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 25, 2019) - It was a good feeling to return to the field for the No. 14 Salt Lake Community College softball team Friday, as the Bruins played their first competitive games since last spring.
The Bruins had even better feelings after stepping off the field on Friday evening, thanks to a three-game sweep of their competition in a tournament in Las Vegas. Salt Lake earned a 5-1 victory over Central Arizona, a 12-2 victory over Pima Community College and an 11-1 victory over Arizona Western on the day, starting the season a perfect 3-0.
Salt Lake will play two games on Saturday in the tournament. The day's first game against Yavapai College will start at 10:30 a.m., while the second game will start at 1:00 p.m. against No. 9 Eastern Arizona.Â
Salt Lake 5, Central Arizona 1: Salt Lake powered to a strong victory in their first game of the season, utilizing solid pitching and timely hitting.
Bruins starter
Kierstyn Ketchell threw a complete game, allowing just four hits and one run in the victory. Ketchell also finished with three strikeouts in her season debut.
An error on a
Paige Reynolds batted ball allowed SLCC to take a 2-0 lead, with a
Mallory Barber home run giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead midway through the fourth inning. Reynolds added an insurance run in the fourth inning, while
Arienn Ackerman hit a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning.
Salt Lake 12, Pima 2: An offensive explosion lifted Salt Lake to an impressive victory over longtime regional rival Pima.
The Bruins posted nine runs in the opening frame, with a
Tarni Steptoe home run lifting the Bruins from the beginning.
Whitnee Alexander had a two-run RBI single later in the inning, with
Dayna Hokanson also hitting a two-run RBI after scoring a run earlier in the frame. Stepto also hit an RBI single in the third inning.Â
SLCC pitcher
Kiara Grover earned her first win of the season, throwing three scoreless innings while surrendering just two hits.
Summer Stensgard closed out the win.
Salt Lake 11, Arizona Western 1: Salt Lake dominated the game from the beginning, leading 7-0 after the first inning in the runaway victory.
A
Dayna Hokanson RBI started the scoring bonanza for Salt Lake, with a two-run double by
Rylee Harris inflicting more damage later in the game.
Tarni Stepto added to the lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single.Â
Kiara Grover picked up her second victory of the day, earning the win in the circle for Salt Lake.Â
