TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 2, 2018) - For all of the ups-and-downs of the 2018 season, the No. 15 Salt Lake Community College softball team has kept its eyes focused squarely on the prize.
The Bruins have powered through strong winning streaks while also suffering from confounding losses; they've understood the power of a team-first mentality while watching several players set individual marks that will stand for long periods of time at one of the Intermountain West's finest junior college programs. Salt Lake will enter the final weekend of the regular season with an overall record of 35-12 and 29-7 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, putting them in prime position to qualify once again for the postseason and beyond.
However, before SLCC can turn its attention to the postseason, the Bruins have to focus their sights on a final regular-season series with league foe Colorado Northwestern Community College. The two programs will play a four-game series starting on Friday at Norma Carr Field, with Salt Lake having successfully swept the Spartans earlier this season by a combined run-total of 70-2 in a series at CNCC earlier this season. This week's games will have a special meaning, above-and-beyond the normal importance of a game, as the Bruins celebrate the program's "Sophomore Day", recognizing the graduating players.
A few of those graduating players have made notable contributions to the Bruins, while two of them have become legendary -
Ashlee Snyder and
Lauren Tycksen. Snyder, the program's all-time leader in home runs and RBI's, earned the SWAC Player-of-the-Week award earlier this week for her strong play last weekend, going 7-of-10 at the plate. Another notable sophomore includes Tycksen, who became the program's all-time leader in steals earlier this season. Other notable sophomores include pitcher
Harley Wells.
Snyder was also named as the NJCAA National Player-of-the-Week on Wednesday, in recognition of her success in last weekend's series.Â
Friday's games will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Norma Carr Field, while Saturday's games will start at 12:00 p.m. Both days will have scheduled doubleheaders.
