Salt Lake falls to Southern Idaho in Region 18 final

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 11, 2018) - All season long, it seemed as if the battle for the Region 18 softball title would inevitably come down to a matchup between Salt Lake Community College and the College of Southern Idaho.

That inevitability came true on Friday, with the top-seeded Golden Eagles hosting their longtime foes, the Bruins. The two programs battled to an extra-innings duel on Thursday, sending Salt Lake into a losers' bracket game Friday morning. The results on Friday mirrored Thursday night's duel, with Southern Idaho earning a 6-4 victory over Salt Lake.

Southern Idaho took an early 1-0 lead, with Salt Lake scoring three runs in the third inning. Sara Bendt delivered a critical two-run single, lifting Salt Lake to a 3-1 lead. Lauren Tycksen lifted the Bruins' lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning. Sadly for SLCC, Southern Idaho scored four-unanswered runs to take the lead, lifting the Golden Eagles to a Region 18 title.

The Bruins end the Region 18 tournament with a record of 41-14.

Salt Lake 12, Snow College 4: A slow start offensively ended in a run-rule victory for the Bruins, saving Salt Lake from being eliminated in the Region 18 tourney losers' bracket final.

Breah Ava hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift SLCC into the championship game matchup with Southern Idaho, after Salt Lake trailed 4-0 to start the game. The bottom of the third inning is when SLCC's offense was jumpstarted, as Laina Suesue hit a grand slam to tie the game at 4-4. Later in the inning, Mary Fredrickson hit a two-run shot to give Salt Lake a 6-4 lead.

Not to be overdone, Ashlee Snyder hit a two-run home run, as the Region 18 Player-of-the-Year extended her career record in home runs in Bruin blue. Snyder also had an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Salt Lake scored nine runs in the third inning.
