Bruins lose heartbreaker to CSI in extra innings

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 10, 2018) - All season long, the Salt Lake Community College and College of Southern Idaho softball programs have battled for supremacy.

Their regular-season matchups in the Scenic West Athletic Conference were always tightly-contested matchups, with games coming down to the wire. The postseason games for the two programs held to that script, with the two foes having a second-round matchup in the Region 18 tournament decided in extra innings. As most of the season went, the battle went the way of Southern Idaho in the tenth inning, with the Golden Eagles earning a 9-8 win over the Bruins.

With All-Region 18 pitcher Kiara Grover starting in the circle, Salt Lake was able to jump out to an early 4-1 lead after a string of early base hits. However, Southern Idaho's offense awoke in the fourth inning, with the Golden Eagles tying the game at 4-4. Then in the fifth, Southern Idaho scored three more runs, eventually stretching the lead to 8-4 after the sixth inning.

However, as was often the case during the regular season, Ashlee Snyder's bat awoke the Bruins in the seventh inning, as Snyder hit a two-run home run to bring Salt Lake within two runs, 8-6. Mary Frederickson would eventually hit a two-RBI single, tying the game at 8-8 and sending the contest to extra innings.

Salt Lake was able to get a runner in scoring position in the ninth inning, with both squads clawing for an advantage. Unfortunately for SLCC, it was CSI would got that advantage in the tenth inning, with a walkoff RBI ending Salt Lake's day.

The loss means Salt Lake will have to win three games on the final day of the tourney to claim the Region 18 title. The Bruins will face off against the winner of an evening contest between Southern Nevada and Snow College at 11:00 a.m. Friday, with the winner advancing to face off against Southern Idaho. Salt Lake defeated Snow College 5-3 in the opening round of the Region 18 tournament Wednesday.
