Bruins split with CSI, fall out of first in league

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 6, 2018) - The No. 4 Salt Lake Community College softball program has faced many ups-and-downs in the 2018 season.

After one of the longest winning streaks in program history, the Bruins came into a matchup with No. 8 College of Southern Idaho recognizing the challenge ahead of them. Salt Lake understands the challenge in full now, with SLCC splitting a Friday doubleheader with CSI, winning game one, 15-13, before falling in game two, 8-7. The day's games leave the Bruins at 25-10 overall and 19-4 in league play.

Salt Lake will host USU Eastern in a four-game series at Norma Carr Field starting next Friday.

Salt Lake 15, Southern Idaho 13: A back-and-forth offensive contest ended in the Bruins picking up their first win of the series.

Salt Lake scored eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a lead it would never look back from, in spite of a late charge by Southern Idaho. The Golden Eagles hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning, nearly lifting themselves to a heroic comeback in a game that featured 25 hits between the two squads.

Trailing 6-2 entering the fifth inning, Salt Lake started a rally with a grand slam of its own, with Ashlee Snyder hitting a blast to right-center field to give the Bruins their first lead of the game. Snyder would go 3-of-5 at the plate with five RBIs in the game. She also hit an RBI double in the game.

Ashlee Anderson went 3-of-4 at the plate, with Paige Reynolds equaling that feat. Salt Lake posted 17 base hits with 6 walks.

Harley Wells earned the win for Salt Lake, in spite of surrendering 11 runs. Wells pitched 5.1 innings, surrendering only two earned runs while posting three strikeouts.

Southern Idaho 8, Salt Lake 7: An extra-innings walk-off sent the Bruins to their third loss in four games.

A Tristin Evans RBI single in the eighth inning sent CSI to a dramatic victory, with the Golden Eagles clawing back to get the win after surrendering game-tying runs to Salt Lake in the top of the seventh inning. The game was an offensive back-and-forth contest, with the programs combining for 23 hits.

CSI took an early 3-0 lead before Salt Lake came back to tie the game at 5-5 entering the fifth inning. Sara Bendt's RBI single tied the game in the fifth, with a Breah Ava RBI double tying the game in the seventh inning.

Dayna Hokanson finished the game 3-of-4 at the plate.
