TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 6, 2018) - All of the successful moments the Salt Lake Community College Bruins men's basketball program experienced in the 2017-18 season will come to a defining point inside Bruin Arena on Saturday.
The Bruins, thanks to a recent win in the Region 18 championship, have earned the right to host the NJCAA District 1 Championship game Saturday at the Taylorsville Campus, hosting Arizona Western College at 7:30 p.m. inside the Lifetime Activities Center. With the winner advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., the stakes couldn't be higher for a SLCC team that went 29-3 in the regular season.
"Arizona Western is the top team out of Arizona," said SLCC coach
Todd Phillips. "They have good guards who spread the floor and really shoot it."
The Arizona Western Matadors went 23-9 during the regular season, defeating Cochise College in the Region 1 Championship to advance to the district title game. Salt Lake and Arizona Western had several shared opponents, including the likes of Mesa Community College.
Phillips noted how SLCCÂ will have to force a particular style of play to win.
"They are similar to the teams in our league as they love to shoot the three-point shot," he said. "We have to guard the three and make them guard us inside to win."
Saturday's championship game will have live stats available at www.slccbruins.com, with the game streaming on live.ksl.com. The NJCAA field will be announced on Mar. 12 as part of #SelectionMonday.Â
