Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 27, 2018) - All season long, the Salt Lake Community College men's soccer program always had an answer to difficult moments; always could conjure up an almost-magical moment at the right time.
Saturday, the Bruins weren't able to go to the well to duplicate those performances, as SLCC ended its season with a 3-2 loss to in-state rival Snow College in the Region 18 championship match at Zions Bank Stadium. The Bruins fell in a 3-1 hole and couldn't recover from Snow's high-powered offensive attack.
Despite playing in hostile territory, it was the Badgers who took a 2-0 lead with 26:37 in the match, after goals by Chanson Vawdrey and Renan Gomes. Jonathan Guadarrama got Salt Lake on the board early in the second half, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Snow countered on a Mitchel Pype goal in the 73rd minute to reestablish a two-goal margin for the Badgers.
Salt Lake would score once more, as
Juan Manuel Araque scored on an unassisted goal to put SLCC down 3-2 with just minutes left. However, the Bruins were unable to find the elusive tying-goal, sending Snow to the Region 18 championship.
Bruins coach
Mark Davis said the loss, while disappointing, will help build Salt Lake for the future.
"Today was extremely disappointing, as the best team in the history of this program ends its season," he said. "I'm proud of our players and give great credit to Snow College for today's match. This loss will help us better understand the level we need to play at to continue improving as a program."
Salt Lake ended its season with a record of 15-3-1 and a Scenic West Athletic Conference regular-season championship. Snow College will advance to next weekend's NJCAAÂ District One Championships in Arizona, at a site yet-to-be-determined.Â
