Salt Lake City, UT—The SLCC softball team (22-12, 20-9 SWAC) swept a pair of contests with North Idaho College (NIC) (20-16, 15-12 SWAC) on Friday at Bruin Field. SLCC leads the regular season series with NIC 4-2 and is currently in third place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings.
The Bruins defeated the Cardinals 11-6 in game one and topped NIC in the day's second contest 4-1. SLCC has won four consecutive games.
Game 1 Recap: NIC took an early two run lead with a single tally in both the second and third innings of play. Salt Lake answered with a four-run rally in the third inning, as freshman infielder Kirsten Anderson (St. George, UT) scored the first run for the Bruins from third base by advancing on a fielder's choice.
Sophomore infielder Megan Bradshaw (Orem, UT) drove in three runs with a bases-clearing triple to give the Bruins a 4-2 lead after three innings. In the fourth inning, freshman infielder Megan Reed (Pocatello, ID) scored on a double hit by freshman infielder Payton Hart (Bountiful, UT) to help SLCC to a 5-2 lead and the Bruins added another tally as Hart crossed home plate on a double from freshman catcher Riana Splinter (Las Vegas, NV).
NIC trimmed the deficit to a single run with a three run output in the sixth inning to make the score 6-5 in favor of SLCC. The Bruins loaded the bases with one out and stretched the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth frame as Anderson scored on an NIC fielding error. Salt Lake added four more runs in the sixth to widen the margin to 11-5.
The Cardinals managed a single run in the top of the seventh inning but SLCC was able to retire the side and secure the game one victory. North Idaho out-hit SLCC 11-6 in the losing effort, with the Cardinals committing seven fielding errors to one for Salt Lake.
Game 1 Stats vs. NIC: Bradshaw was 1-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and five runs batted in (RBI). Splinter was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Hart went 1-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI and freshman catcher KyRae Kogianes (Riverton, UT) was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Freshman pitcher Baylee Reeves (Brigham City, UT) picked up her eighth win of the season with three strikeouts, 11 hits, one walk and six runs (three earned) allowed in a complete game effort. Her win/loss record now stands at 8-4.
Game 2 Recap: NIC scored first for the second consecutive game, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Three of Salt Lake's four runs in the contest came in the third inning. Sophomore infielder Taylor Tann (Syracuse, UT) was the first Bruin to cross home plate, scoring from second base on an RBI single from freshman outfielder Courtney Beavers (Murray, UT) to tie the game at one run apiece.
Reed drove in two runs to score teammates Beavers and Anderson and give SLCC a 3-1 lead. Salt Lake put its last tally of the game up on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Beavers that brought in freshman infielder Bailie Nelson (Las Vegas, NV) to make the score 4-1.
SLCC held NIC scoreless through the last six innings of the game to hold on for the 4-1 win in game two. The Bruins tagged 12 base hits to seven for the Cardinals, with each team committing one fielding error in the contest.
Game 2 Stats vs. NIC: Freshman pitcher Courtney Platt (7-5) (Riverton, UT) picked up the win in game two with five strikeouts, three walks, seven hits and one earned run allowed in a complete game effort.
Beavers went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI and Reed was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Kogianes was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, a double and a walk and Bradshaw was 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base. Tann was 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and Anderson was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Next up for Head Coach Cyndee Bennett and the Bruins is a pair of home games against NIC on Saturday, Mar. 29 at Bruin Field. First pitch for game one is slated for Noon with game two beginning 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
