SLCC Softball Sweeps Pair of Contests with Colorado Northwestern CC

Bruins outscore Lady Spartans 26-4 on the day, win both games by run rule

Rangely, CO—The SLCC softball team (20-12, 18-9 SWAC) won a pair of road games over Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) (3-31, 3-26 SWAC) on Saturday.

The Bruins won both games by run rule in five innings, defeating the Lady Spartans 13-1 in the first contest and winning game two by a final score of 13-3.  

Game 1 Recap: Sophomore infielder Megan Bradshaw (Orem, UT) led off the scoring for SLCC with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. CNCC scored its only run of the contest in the bottom of the first frame on a solo home run from Jaisha Webb.

Freshman infielder Kirsten Anderson (St. George, UT) scored from third base on a sacrifice fly ball from the bat of freshman catcher Riana Splinter (Las Vegas, NV) for Salt Lake's only tally of the second inning.

The Bruins added four more runs in the top of the third inning when Bradshaw scored from third base on a passed ball and Anderson tagged a double to score two teammates, making the score 7-1. Anderson would score on a triple from the bat of SLCC freshman outfielder Courtney Beavers (Murray, UT) giving Salt Lake an 8-1 lead.

Back-to-back home runs for SLCC in the fourth inning from freshman outfielder Bailie Nelson (Las Vegas, NV) and sophomore infielder Taylor Tann (Syracuse, UT) added to the margin. Nelson's home run was a three-run shot and was followed by a solo home run from Tann, widening the gap to 12-1.

SLCC scored once more as freshman infielder Megan Reed (Pocatello, ID) crossed home plate on a single by Splinter.

The Bruins out-hit the Lady Spartans 13-3 in game one with each team committing one error in the field.  

Game 1 Stats vs. CNCC: Bradshaw was 1-for-4 with a walk, a home run and three runs batted in (RBI). Splinter was 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and a run scored and Nelson went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Anderson was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Beavers went 1-for-3 with a triple and one RBI.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Platt (Riverton, UT) picked up the win with two strikeouts, three hits and one earned run allowed in four innings in the circle. Freshman pitcher Chelsa Baca (Las Vegas, NV) struck out two CNCC batters with no hits or runs allowed in one inning of work.

Game 2 Recap: Salt Lake took an early 3-0 lead on a three-run home run from Riana Splinter. CNCC closed the gap to 3-1 after one inning of play.

The Bruins added two runs in the second inning with Megan Reed hitting a double to score Beavers, who reached on a CNCC error. A Splinter single would score Reed and make the score 5-1 in favor of SLCC.

Salt Lake tallied seven runs in the third inning, beginning with freshman catcher KyRae Kogianes (Riverton, UT) crossing home plate from third base on a bunt by Kirsten Anderson. Bailie Nelson scored on a bases-loaded walk to Courtney Beavers.

Taylor Tann and Anderson both scored on a Reed single in the third inning and Reed would later score on another base hit by Splinter. Freshman outfielder Aubrie Kilpack (Taylorsville, UT) scored SLCC's last run of the inning as Salt Lake took a 12-1 lead.

Beavers scored the last run of the contest for SLCC on a base hit by Splinter in the fourth inning. CNCC chipped away at the Bruin lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning but the rally was not enough as SLCC held on for the 13-3 win.

SLCC out-hit CNCC 13-5 in game two with each team committing two fielding errors. Salt Lake outscored the Lady Spartans 26-4 on the day and 33-11 for the four game weekend series.

Game 2 Stats vs. CNCC: Courtney Platt picked up her second win of the day with two strikeouts, one walk, three hits and one unearned run allowed in four innings pitched. Baca struck out one Lady Spartan batter with two hits and two runs, one earned, yielded in one inning in the circle.

Next up for Head Coach Cyndee Bennett and the Bruins is a home doubleheader against SWAC opponent North Idaho College (NIC) (19-12, 15-9 SWAC) on Friday, Mar. 28 at Bruin Softball Field on the SLCC Taylorsville Redwood Campus.

Game one will begin at 1 p.m. and the day's second contest will get underway 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first contest.
