SLCC Baseball Preps for 2014 Conference Openers

Bruins get set to square off with rival Western Nevada in pair of away doubleheaders

Salt Lake City, UT—The SLCC Baseball team (8-6) will open its 2014 Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season schedule this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against rival No. 14-ranked Western Nevada College (WNC) (11-5) in Carson City, NV.

The Bruins will face the Wildcats twice on Friday, Feb. 28 with first pitch for game one of the doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. Game two of the double-dip will begin 30 minutes prior to the conclusion of the first contest.

On Saturday, Mar. 1, game one of the doubleheader between the Bruins and Wildcats will get underway at Noon and the day's second matchup will start 30 minutes following the end of game one.

Game Coverage: The SLCC vs. WNC games will be available for viewing via the WNC Athletics U-Stream account at: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/western-nevada-baseball. The broadcasts will begin approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch of each game.

Last Time They Met: SLCC defeated WNC 4-3 on Feb. 21 at the SWAC Preseason Tournament in Henderson, NV.

Bruins by the Numbers: The Bruins are averaging 5.0 runs scored per contest and are allowing an average of 4.6 runs per game to the opposition.

The SLCC pitching staff has a combined earned run average (ERA) of 3.80 with 14 different pitchers having made appearances so far in 2014. Freshman pitcher Chris Bradford (Las Vegas, NV) has a team-high 2-0 win/loss record with an ERA of 6.25 in five total appearances (2 starts) with 10 strikeouts.

Sophomore infielder Derrick Whitney (South Jordan, UT) has a team-high batting average of .360 (minimum 10 at-bats). The Bingham High School graduate is tied for the team lead in base hits with 18 and is also tied for tops on the squad with two triples. He has four doubles on the season with six runs batted in (RBI) in 50 total at-bats.

Freshman outfielder Caleb Summerhays (Las Vegas, NV) leads the team in RBI with 10 and is hitting for a .283 average through 14 games. He is tied with Whitney for the team lead in triples at three, has 13 base hits including one double and one home run in 46 at-bats.

The Bruins have a team batting average of .240 with a fielding percentage of .953 as a team. Salt Lake is 0-0 at home, 3-0 in true away games and is 5-6 in neutral-site contests.

SLCC Softball Resumes Eight-Game Home Stand vs. Southern Nevada this Weekend

Bruins to face Lady Coyotes for first time this season

Salt Lake City, UT—The No. 16-ranked SLCC Softball team (12-8, 10-5 SWAC) will host Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent College of Southern Nevada (CSN) (13-5, 8-4 SWAC) in a pair of doubleheaders this weekend at Bruin Softball Field.

On Friday, Feb. 28, SLCC will face CSN in game one of the doubleheader with first pitch set for 1 p.m. Game two will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first matchup.

SLCC will close its four game series with CSN on Saturday, Mar. 1 with first pitch for game one of the conference doubleheader slated for Noon. Game two will get underway 30 minutes following the end of the day's first contest.

The Bruins are currently in second place in the SWAC standings, one half game behind rival No. 9-ranked College of Southern Idaho (CSI) (16-8, 11-5 SWAC). SLCC leads the regular season series with CSI three games to one.

Bruins by the Numbers: SLCC is scoring an average of 7.4 runs per outing and is allowing its opposition an average of 5.2 runs per contest.

The SLCC pitching staff has a combined earned run average (ERA) of 5.30. Freshman pitcher Paige Reimann (South Jordan, UT) has a team-best 4-0 win/loss record and is second on the squad in strikeouts with 22 so far this season. The Bingham High School graduate has an ERA of 6.09 in four starts with 10 total appearances.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Platt (Riverton, UT) has a team-low ERA of 3.66 with a team-best 25 strikeouts in eight starts and 12 total appearances. The Bruins have struck out a total of 75 opposing batters through 20 games.

Bruin sophomore infielder Megan Bradshaw (Orem, UT) leads the team in batting average and is hitting .500 so far this year. She has five doubles, three home runs and 18 runs batted in (RBI). Freshman infielder Megan Reed (Pocatello, ID) leads the team in base hits with 35 including seven doubles and one home run. The Highland (ID) High School graduate has 21 RBI.

Freshman catcher/designated hitter Riana Splinter (Las Vegas, NV) has a team-high six home runs in the 2014 campaign and is hitting .462 through 65 total at-bats. The Silverado High School graduate has 30 base hits.

SLCC is 3-1 at home, 2-1 in true away games and 7-6 in neutral-site contests.
