Bruins fall 7-2 in game one, Tann's walk-off home run helps SLCC to 6-4 game two victory

Salt Lake City, UT—The No. 16 SLCC Softball team (10-8, 8-5 SWAC) split a pair of contests with No. 9-ranked College of Southern Idaho (CSI) (16-6, 11-3 SWAC) on Friday at Bruin Softball Field. The doubleheader marked the 2014 Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) home openers for SLCC.

Game 1 Recap: SLCC fell behind early, trailing 3-0 through the first four innings of play. SLCC put a pair of runs on the board in the fifth frame to cut the deficit to one run but the Golden Eagles tallied four runs in the sixth inning and held the Bruins scoreless throughout the rest of the contest.

CSI finished with 10 base hits and one error committed and the Bruins had four hits while going error-free for the game.

Game 2 Recap: The Bruins fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but claimed a 3-1 lead with two runs in the first inning and a single tally in the fourth frame. CSI rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning but Bruin sophomore infielder Taylor Tann (Syracuse, UT) hit a two-run walk-off home run with one out to seal the victory for Salt Lake. Each team had seven hits in the game with SLCC committing five errors in the field and CSI finishing with one fielding error.

Game 1 Stats vs. CSI: Freshman pitcher Courtney Platt (Riverton, UT) took the loss in game one with one strikeout, four walks and three runs (all earned) allowed in 2.0 innings of work.

Freshman shortstop Payton Hart (Bountiful, UT) was 1-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in (RBI) in the losing effort. Freshman outfielder Corinne Cleverly (West Valley City, UT) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Game 2 Stats vs. CSI: Freshman pitcher Baylee Reeves (Brigham City, UT) earned the win in game two with one strikeout, seven hits and four runs (three earned) allowed in a complete game effort.

Tann was 1-for-3 with the game-winning walk-off home run and a walk and sophomore infielder Megan Bradshaw (Orem, UT) was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Freshman catcher KyRae Kogianes (Riverton, UT) was 1-for-2 at the plate with a home run and two RBI as the designated hitter.

Next up for Head Coach Cyndee Bennett and the Bruins is a doubleheader against No. 9 CSI on Saturday, Feb. 22 with first pitch for game one slated for Noon. Game two of the doubleheader will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first contest.
