No. 2 SLCC Softball finishes Weekend 5-1

No. 2 SLCC Softball finishes weekend 5-1 #2 SLCC 6 AZW 3 #2 SLCC 2 #1 YC 3 #2 SLCC 10 CA 5 #2 SLCC 9 #9 Pima 0 Henderson, NV- The 2nd ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruin Softball team completed opening weekend with a 5-1 record overall. The Bruins only loss came at the hands of defending National Champion Yavapai College while Salt Lake defeated #9 Pima, Central Arizona, Western Arizona, Eastern Arizona and Phoenix College. Ariel Zimmerman picked up the win over Western Arizona striking out seven will allowing five hits. Mylee Davis belted a two run double while Savanah Webster was 2 for 4. Freshman McCauley Flint took to the mound versus Yavapai, Flint held Yavapai scoreless till the fourth inning. Salt Lake answered back taking a 2-1 lead into the top of the seventh when a two out error allowed Yavapai to take the 3-2 lead. Yavapai pitching finished the game striking out 13 Bruin batters. Trina Gomez was 3-3 picking up both Salt Lake RBI's. Against Central Arizona, the Bruins fell down two runs early but key hitting and shutdown pitching allowed Salt Lake to battle to the 10-5 win. Zimmerman picked up the win with nine strikeouts. Webster smashed a grand slam finishing the game 3 for 4 with four RBI. Starlee Hutching connected on a two run home run and Maddy Woodard was 2 for 3. In the final game of the tournament the Bruins were faced with ninth ranked Pima College. Flint kept Pima off balance the entire game with seven strikeouts and threw Salt Lake's 1st no hitter of the season. Webster stayed hot with a three run home run and drove home six runs as the Bruins defeated Pima 9-0. Gomez was 4-4 while Brooke Budge launched a two run home run over the left field fence. No. 2 Salt Lake (5-1) will travel to Yuma Arizona for the Great Western Shootout next weekend.
