TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Thursday, May 2, 2024)— Fifth-ranked Salt Lake took two significant steps toward hosting the Region 18 postseason tournament with run-rule victories over Southern Nevada.
SLCC improved to 42-7 overall and 34-4 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
The Bruins need one win on Friday to clinch the top spot in the SWAC regular season and the right to host the Region 18 tournament May 6-8.
Game One
SLCC 14 | CSN 5
four home runs powered the Bruins past a plucky Coyote team in the series opener.
CSN took a first-inning lead when Katelyn Hunter blasted one of her two home runs to straightaway center. Salt Lake responded with a four-run bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run homer from Shelbee Jones.
Jones picked up another RBI in the second inning, and then Lexi Shaver delivered a three-run no-doubter that gave SLCC an 8-2 lead.
Bailey Marvin and Kylee Ruesch joined the long-ball parade as the Bruins pounded out six extra-base hits and stole four bases in the blowout win.
Mikayla Jankovic struck out seven and gave up four hits in the complete game win.
Miranda Mansfield was 4-4 with three runs scored, while five others had two hits. Jones, Marvin, and Shaver each finished with three RBI.
Game Two
SLCC 12 | CSN 0
A five-run first inning blew the game open for Salt Lake as the No. 5 Bruins completed a day-one sweep over the Coyotes.
Shelbee Jones finished the five-inning complete game, giving up three hits and striking out 11 overmatched CSN batters.
Reigning SWAC Player of the Week, Jettlee Ioane continued a torrid stretch at the plate, going 2-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Kylee Ruesch drove in four runs from the eight spot in the line-up, highlighting Salt Lake's offensive depth.
