TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Saturday, March 9, 2024) – No. 3 Salt Lake started slowly but got rolling late in the first half and never relinquished control in an 87-65 win over Southern Idaho to clinch the Region 18 championship.
The Golden Eagles led 22-13 with 10:42 to play but were outscored 22-7 the rest of the half, as the Bruins took a six-point lead into halftime.
CSI scored the first in the second half, cutting the lead to four, but never got closer. Salt Lake outscored the Golden Eagles 52-36 in the final 20 minutes.
Five Bruins scored in double-figures, with 18 points and 16 rebounds from Xavier Edmonds.
Jordan Battle followed his 24-point performance against North Idaho with 15 points, seven assists, and five rebounds, earning him the Region 18 Tournament MVP.
Zaon Collins added 15 points and three steals, Preston Squire hit four threes off the bench for 14 points, and CJ Luster finished with 13 points and five assists.
The Bruins collected six blocks, led by three from Edmonds, as a team and were credited with assists on 23 of its 29 field goals.
Salt Lake's defense held one of the SWAC's best offenses to 41.4 percent from the field and forced 11 turnovers.
No. 3 SLCC travels to Arizona on Saturday, March 16, to face the Region 1 champion. The tip-off time is TBD.
The NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, begins on Monday, March 25.
