TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Saturday, January 27, 2024) – The No. 12 Salt Lake Bruins rebounded from a pair of losses to open the spring schedule by winning three straight in convincing fashion.
Game One
SLCC 6 | Pima CC 8
Chalk eight SLCC errors up to first-game jitters in the season-opening loss. Just two of Pima's eight runs were earned.
Salt Lake held a 4-0 lead after nine outs but the floodgates opened as Pima exploded for three runs in the second, three in the fourth, and two more in the fifth with a porous Bruins defense unable to convert outs.
Redshirt freshman third baseman Lexi Shaver went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Sophomore shortstop Miranda Mansfield finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
Four Bruins pitchers combined to allow eight hits while striking out seven and walking five.
Game Two
SLCC 1 | Central Arizona College 2
Shelbee Jones (0-1) was great in her first start but surrendered a walk-off homer in the 2-1 loss.
Jones did everything for SLCC, throwing 7.1 innings and striking out 13 while giving up just three hits and two runs (one earned). The former Bingham Miner carried a shutout into the sixth inning and then gave her team a 1-0 lead with a solo home run to center field. She finished 2-for-3 at the dish. Miranda Mansfield was the only other Bruin with two hits in the game.
Arizona Central tied the game in the bottom half of the sixth with an unearned run before Jones gave up the walk-off shot in extra innings.
Game Three
SLCC 10 | Arizona Western College 2
The Bruins offense got going with four extra-base hits, including a three-run, fifth-inning bomb from Khloie Kramer to run-rule Arizona Western.
Bailey Marvin, Shelbee Jones, and Chloe Woods each finished with two hits while Woods joined Kramer with three RBI. Kendyl Purdy finished with two of the Bruins' six stolen bases.
Sophomore Tiffany Hermansen (1-0) went the distance in the circle, allowing three hits and two earned runs. Hermansen walked four and struck out four in the complete game win.
Game Four
SLCC 7 | Yavapai College 3
SLCC plated three first-inning runs and never trailed against Yavaapai College with Mikayla Jankovic (1-0) getting the win.
Jankovic struck out nine while allowing three earned runs on six hits in six innings.
Kendyl Purdy and Miranda Mansfield notched three hits.
Game Five
SLCC 9 | Eastern Arizona College 1
Salt Lake jumped all over Eastern Arizona, scoring eight runs in the first two innings as Shelbee Jones (1-1) twirled another gem in the circle.
Jones gave up one unearned run on two hits while striking out five in four innings. At the plate, the 5'6 freshman was 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Bailey Marvin was also perfect at the plate, hitting a double, a triple, and a home run to finish with two runs scored and four RBI.
