SLCC Baseball sweeps through USU club team in doubleheader

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 15, 2022) – The Salt Lake Community College Baseball team played its home opener on Tuesday to strong acclaim.

SLCC earned a doubleheader sweep over Utah State University's Club Team, posting victories of 10-4 and 12-2 in the first games of the 2022 season at Cate Field. The wins lift the Bruins to 6-4 overall.

Salt Lake will host USU for another doubleheader on Wednesday.

Salt Lake 10, USU 4: A fast start propelled the Bruins to the win.

Colton Easton and Braden Winget both hit home runs in the first inning, and SLCC never trailed in the game. Extra-base hits were the flavor of the game as Travis Johnson added a solo home run in the third inning, then both Zach Blaszak and Bruer Webster added RBI doubles in the fourth inning. SLCC finished with 12 hits in the win.

Derik Eaquin earned the pitching win for the Bruins, throwing three innings and finishing with six strikeouts. Daniel Gonzales was 2-of-3 at the plate for Salt Lake.

Salt Lake 12, USU 2: Another offensive explosion lifted the Bruins to a run-rule victory in the fifth inning.

After Utah State scored two runs in the top of the first inning, SLCC posted a barrage of runs in the second inning, scoring six runs on a pair of two-RBI doubles from Karson Bodily and Colton Easton. Chase Taylor later added a solo home run in the third inning, followed up by a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Spencer Jones picked up the pitching win, striking out seven batters in three innings.
