TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 23, 2021) - The No. 7 Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team had an offensive coming-out on Saturday, finishing with a dominating victory that capped a successful opening weekend.
The Bruins picked up a 118-54 win over Layton Christian Academy's Post-Grad program on Saturday, finishing a weekend tournament with a 2-0 record. SLCC averaged 108.5 points in the two wins, shooting 48.9 percent for the LCA win.
"I'm proud of our guys for going 2-0 on the weekend," said SLCC coach
Kyle Taylor. "It was good to be back playing regular season games. We got contributions from a lot of different players. That is going to be critical to our team's success this year."
Salt Lake held a dominant 51-17 halftime lead, with defense playing a strong role in the hot start. Overall, SLCCÂ forced 36 turnovers in the game and scored 49 points off those turnovers, also controlling statistical categories like points-in-the-paint (64-20) and bench points (65-8).
James Lee led all scorers in the win, finishing with 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting.
Bendji Pierre and
Maks Klanjscek both scored 16 points, while
Da'Vantre Vitor finished with 12 points.
Felix Lemetti and
Jackson Last were the other double-digit scorers with 11 points in the win. Last finished 4-of-5 from the field off the bench.Â
While the scoring totals were high, Taylor focused on the team's prowess in other statistics.Â
"We did a terrific job on the offensive glass," said Taylor. "We had 30 offensive rebounds. Jay and Jackson led us with 5 apiece. And Bendji had 4. We forced 36 turnovers, James and Quincy led us in that category with 5 apiece."
Salt Lake will play three games on the road next weekend in Wyoming, starting with a game against Central Wyoming on Friday.Â
