TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 16, 2020) - The No. 20 Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team earned a road victory Thursday, staying perfect in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
The Bruins earned a 77-70 win over USU Eastern, going unbeaten through the first run through SWAC play. SLCC went 2-0 in a road swing through central Utah, improving to 18-4 overall and 4-0 in the Scenic West.
USU Eastern jumped out to a big halftime lead, leading 43-34 at intermission. Salt Lake started to make a comeback in the second half and took the lead after
Spencer Johnson hit a three-point shot with 13:46 left in the game. The two traded leads back and forth, before the Bruins climbed ahead for good with 6:55 left.
Christian Popoola finished with 17 points in the game, with
Justice Hill had 14 points.
Tutu Majok posted 12 points and
Spencer Johnson had 10 points.
SLCC coach
Kyle Taylor said the win was a strong victory for the Bruins, considering the come-back efforts.
"We got USU Eastern's best shot," he said. "They were good, they made shots, rebounded the ball and played really hard. I give them a lot of credit, they were ready to play. We didn't play our best but we found a way.
"Our pressure defense in the second half was good and we forced some turnovers and changed the tempo of the game.
Christian Popoola and
Tutu Majok both had big games for us off the bench."
Salt Lake will be off Saturday before hosting Snow College on Thursday, Jan. 23 inside the Lifetime Activities Center.Â
