TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 29, 2019) - Whether on the road or at home, the No. 9 Salt Lake Community College softball team is rolling on with momentum these days. However, sometimes that momentum has bumps in the road.
SLCC split a Friday doubleheader at the College of Southern Nevada Friday, falling 7-5 in game one before earning a 13-0 victory in game two. The split sets Salt Lake's overall record at 22-6 and 14-4 in Scenic West play.
The Bruins and Coyotes will play another doubleheader on Saturday to finish the series. The first game Saturday is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at Lady Coyotes Softball Field.
Southern Nevada 7, Salt Lake 5: A CSN grand-slam home run took away an early Bruins lead and ended with a Southern Nevada win.
Salt Lake built an early 4-0 lead behind timely hitting and quality pitching from Brook Carter. However, the Coyotes took advantage in the fourth inning with a grand-slam home run, tying the game. CSN took a 5-4 lead on a wild-pitch in the fifth inning, a lead they would never relinquish.
Kim Taylor finished 3-of-4 at the plate and Tarni Stepto went 2-of-4. Carter took the pitching loss, throwing all six innings while striking out four Coyotes.
Salt Lake 13, Southern Nevada 0: A grand-slam home run by Mercedes Call lofted Salt Lake to a victory.
The Bruins scored five runs in both the second and third innings, with a Tarni Stepto RBI opening the door to a 1-0 lead for SLCC after the first inning.
Call finished 2-of-3 on the day with 6 RBI's to lead Salt Lake. Whitnee Alexander went 2-of-4 at the plate.
Mia Cullimore earned the victory in the pitching circle, throwing five innings of three-hit ball.
