No. 14 SLCC Softball sweeps league doubleheader

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 1, 2019) - The No. 14 Salt Lake Community College softball team has experienced a very successful 2019 preseason and if the start to the 2019 Scenic West Athletic Conference schedule is any indicator, the Bruins are headed for a high-flying season.

Salt Lake swept a SWAC doubleheader with Colorado Northwestern Community College Friday, earning victories of 10-4 and 11-3 to open the Scenic West season at 2-0. SLCC's overall record is now 10-2.

The Bruins and Spartans will play two more games on Saturday at Norma Carr Field, with the first game of the day starting at 12:00 p.m.

Salt Lake 10, Colorado Northwestern 4: A well-timed offensive outburst in the fifth inning lifted Salt Lake to the game one victory.

Tied 3-3, Salt Lake scored 7 runs in the fifth inning to run away with the victory. With the bases loaded, Kim Taylor hit a grand slam to give SLCC a definitive lead that proved to be the game-winning runs. The Bruins tallied 10 hits in the victory, with Tarni Stepto going 3-of-3 at the plate.

A Dayna Hokanson RBI single scored the game's first run in the first inning for Salt Lake but Colorado Northwestern recovered to take a 2-1 lead in the second inning. A Stepto RBI double in the third inning cut into the CNCC lead.

Kierstyn Ketchell pitched the complete game victory for Salt Lake, going eight complete innings while surrendering just two earned runs. She had three strikeouts in the win.

Salt Lake 11, Colorado Northwestern 3: Salt Lake exploded offensively early, leading 5-0 after the first inning while running to the video.

A Breah Ava double in the first inning scored two runs, with Mia Cullimore adding two more runs to the tally with a double in the second inning. SLCC had 11 hits in the game, with just three of those being extra-base hits.

Besides going 1-of-3 at the plate, Cullimore pitched five complete innings of three-run ball. The Kaysville native struck out six Spartans.
