TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 7, 2019) - Cross-country travel didn't faze the No. 14 Salt Lake Community College softball program, as success found the Bruins in spite of them being in the warm humidity compared to the winter chill.
The Bruins split a doubleheader with No. 2 Chipola College in Florida Thursday, falling 8-3 in game one before rebounding for a 12-1 victory in game two. The games leave SLCC with a 6-1 overall record.
Salt Lake will play three games in a tournament Friday, facing off against Florida Southwest College, Pensacola Community College and Central Florida Community College. The day's first game against Florida Southwest will start at 9:00 a.m.
Salt Lake 12, Chipola 1: An advantageous offense lifted SLCC to a victory in the night's second game, with the Bruins capturing the nightcap after narrowly falling in the first game.
Salt Lake did all of its damage in two innings, with the Bruins getting on the board with a four-run third inning and then punctuating the victory in an eight-run seventh inning. SLCC posted 12 hits in the victory, with five extra-base hits on the night (all doubles). A
Tarni Stepto two-run single in the fourth inning gave SLCC its first runs, followed up with the Bruins earning two unearned runs. A
Paige Reynolds RBI double opened the seventh inning's offensive explosion.
Strong pitching played an important role in SLCC's victory, with
Kierstyn Ketchell moving to 4-0 on the season with a complete-game victory. Ketchell surrendered just one run and four hits while striking out six Chipola batters, throwing her second complete game of the season. On another statistical note,
Arienn Ackerman finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate.Â
Chipola 8, Salt Lake 3: Chipola took early command of the day's first game and never looked back, powering to an impressive win.
Chipola led 6-0 after the third inning, establishing a lead that couldn't be surmounted. Salt Lake finally scored in the fifth inning on a Stepto RBI walk, with a wild pitch and a
Breah Ava RBI single providing the rest of the offense.
Mercedes Call finished 2-of-3 at the plate to lead Salt Lake.Â
