Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (August 25, 2018) - Preseason matches are a prime space to face a variety of different scenarios, from winning easily to facing defeat.
The No. 15 Salt Lake Community College volleyball program looked the second scenario squarely in the face Saturday, trailing Northeastern Junior College in their first match of a two-match day. In spite of the adversity, the Bruins powered to a comeback over NJC (21-25, 21-25, 28-26, 25-22, 15-5), and then easily defeated Northwest College (25-11, 25-17, 25-21). Salt Lake finished the Casper College-hosted tournament at 4-0 with the Saturday sweep.Â
The Bruins will play their first match of the 2018 season at home Tuesday, as they host Eastern Arizona College at 7:00 p.m. inside the Lifetime Activities Center. Salt Lake will host its annual "Crystal 'Inn'vitational" tournament on Labor Day weekend, with two matches scheduled for both Friday and Saturday.
Salt Lake 3, Northeastern Junior College 2: The Bruins survived a scare in their opening match of the day, fighting off three match points in the third set to rally for a victory.
After losing the first two sets of the match, Salt Lake found itself trailing Northeastern late, facing elimination and their first loss of the season. Instead, the Bruins powered to a 28-26 set victory in the third set, followed up by gutting out a 25-22 set win. SLCC easily powered to a 15-5 fifth-set victory.
Hellen Lacava finished with 17 kills to lead the Bruins.
Callie Whitney played an important role defensively, finishing with 30 digs. Service errors nearly cost Salt Lake the match, as the Bruins posted 20 service errors.
Salt Lake 3, Northwest 0: SLCC powered to a victory over Northwest College, earning their second sweep of the young season.
Newcomer
Ryley Daniel led the Bruins with 9 kills, also contributing an ace. Salt Lake hit .272 in the match, finishing with 34 kills. Defensively,
Callie Whitney led Salt Lake with 17 digs.Â
