TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 17, 2018) - In spite of what coaches publicly say, some regular-season matches in soccer just mean more.
For instance, take Wednesday's 'Sophomore Day' matchup at Zions Bank Stadium between the No. 14 Salt Lake Community College women's soccer program and in-state foe Snow College. The Bruins entered the match a full-game behind Snow College, meaning the two programs would be deadlocked with the other in trying to decide the Scenic West Athletic Conference title if the right moves fell into place.Â
The right moves fell for Salt Lake, as the Bruins earned a 2-0 win over Snow to move to 11-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in league play. Salt Lake finished the season a perfect 10-0 at home.
A back-and-forth affair from the beginning, Salt Lake's
Litzy Serna broke a 0-0 tie in the 31st minute on a
Samantha Tippetts assist to take a 1-0 lead. Later, it was
Sydney Hathaway who scored to give Salt Lake a commanding 2-0 lead. The Bruins finished with a 13-8 advantage over Snow in shots.
Salt Lake and Snow are now tied in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, with both having one remaining match in league play. If Salt Lake beats USU Eastern Friday, they will claim a share of the league title with tiebreakers establishing who will earn the rights to host the Region 18 tournament for the men-and-women. If Snow loses to Southern Nevada, coupled with a Bruins win, Salt Lake will earn the title and right to host the tourneys.
SLCCÂ will travel to play USU Eastern Friday, with a match time of 1:00 p.m. A recap will be available later that night on www.slccbruins.com.Â
