What is Esports and what games does SLCC Esports support?
Esports is competitive video games! We have many talented students who play video games, but only certain games can be competed against other colleges. Here are the games we currently support but more can be added depending on student interest and NJCAAE offerings:
- Chess (adding in Fall 24)
- Hearthstone
- Overwatch 2
- Valorant
- League of Legends
- Rocket League
- Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Halo Infinite
- Mario Kart 8
- Rainbow Six Siege
- StarCraft 2
What collegiate competitions do the teams compete in?
SLCC Esports competes primarily through the NJCAAE (National Junior College Athletics Association Esports). We compete each semester in a Fall and Spring seasons through weekly matches and regional/national playoffs like any traditional sport! You can learn more about the NJCAAE here:
https://www.njcaaesports.org/ However, we do compete in other tournaments and with other organizations whenever possible as well!
How do I find out more to contact or join SLCC Esports?
You can reach us in our public Discord Community at:
https://discord.gg/5gphgPV4ev
Or you can email the SLCC Esports Director & Head Coach, Jeff Sosa, at
jsosa2@slcc.edu
What are the requirements to be on the team?
You must have the following to compete with SLCC Esports on a Varsity (Tier 1) or JV (Tier 2) level and we accept players of all skill levels at any time:
- Be a full-time student at SLCC (12 credit hours or more per semester or full-time in your certificate program).
- Have a minimum 2.0 GPA before and while competing.
If you are a part-time student, then there are still ways to compete in the program through our Casual (Tier 3) Brackets in the NJCAAE.
- Dates and times for recruitment/registration meetings and audition/tryout days can be found in the Discord Community at: https://discord.gg/5gphgPV4ev
Are there scholarships available for Esports?
Yes, athletic scholarships/tuition waivers are available to competitors who are recruited into the program from high school or earn them through our application process after being in the program for at least one semester. Application information, requirements, and deadlines can be found in the SLCC Esports Discord after a student has competed in the program for at least one semester.
SLCC Esports does not currently recruit or scholarship international students directly. International students hoping for scholarships through esports will need to apply and be accepted into SLCC first, compete with the program for a semester, and then apply for an esports scholarship.
