West Jordan, Utah- Salt Lake baseball (32-14) split today's doubleheader with CSI (40-12).
CSI won the first game of the day 2-1. The Golden Eagles scored two runs (one unearned) in the top of the first and Salt Lake scored one run in the bottom of the first off an RBI single from LF Lute Chavez that scored SS Drew Smith. From there it was a pitching duel.
LHP Kyson Giles earned the win for CSI and tossed 6.1 innings. Giles allowed one run on four hits and struck out six batters. RHP Austin Laycock struck out eight batters for Salt Lake and allowed five hits as he threw all seven innings. Both starting pitchers were excellent and there was only one walk and one HBP in the game.
SLCC won an eventful game two 10-8. CSI led 6-1 in the middle of the third. The Bruins scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning off an RBI from Smith and a two-RBI single from 1B Kaden Hodson.
CSI scored two runs in the top of the fifth before stranding the bases loaded. In the bottom of the fifth DH Kade Gambill drove in a run and then the Bruins followed suit and stranded the bases loaded. SLCC pulled away as they scored five runs in the sixth inning. 2B Gage Wareham snuck a ball over the left field fence for a solo home run. The Bruins rallied with five straight hits with two outs. Chavez and Hodson both doubled and then Kade Gambill hit a two-run home run to give Salt Lake the lead. RF Willy Roberts singled and brought in C AJ Thomas for the final run of the game.
Salt Lake pulled off the comeback as LHP Mason Green got the last nine outs for Salt Lake without surrendering a run. Green picked up his third win of the season and recorded five strikeouts.
RF Trey Purser of CSI put up a phenomenal performance offensively with three home runs for the Golden Eagles in the 10-8 loss.
