Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 3, 2023) - The Salt Lake Community College Men's Basketball team successfully defended its Region 18 championship Friday.
No. 9 SLCC earned a 76-71 win over in-state rival Snow College, avenging a recent loss to the Badgers at the most opportune time. The Bruins are now 28-4 overall and have all but clinched their fourth consecutive berth in the upcoming NJCAA championships.
SLCC jumped out to a strong lead early, taking a 44-32 advantage at halftime. The tables flipped in the second half though, with the Bruins shooting poorly enough for Snow to take a 68-63 lead with 4:50 remaining in the game. The Bruins turned it on offensively once again though, tying the game at 68-68 on a
Jared Garcia score with 3:08 left.
Garcia would hit another three just seconds later, giving SLCC a lead it would never surrender. To finish off the performance, Garcia hit the clinching free throws to give SLCC the final lead and a successful defense of its Region 18 title.
Dwayne Koroma led the Bruins with 17 points, while Garcia and
Jalen Weaver finished with 12 points each.
Hunter Erickson scored 10 points in the win.
SLCC was also prominently represented on the All-Region 18 list, with Koroma named as the Tournament MVP. Both
Jalen Weaver and
Jared Garcia were also named to the All-Tournament team.
Salt Lake will play in next week's NJCAA Western District championship game. Information on the upcoming matchup will be released on slccbruins.com.
