TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 15, 2023) – A bizarre tiebreaker ended in a positive result for the No. 3 Salt Lake Community College men's soccer team.
The Bruins, along with Barton and Indian Hills, were engaged in a rare three-team playoff for a spot in the NJCAA national semifinals on Thursday in Kansas, playing shortened games in a round-robin format to decide the qualifier. Luck was on the side of Salt Lake Wednesday, with the Bruins earning a dramatic 1-0 win over Barton to qualify for a berth against Monroe on Thursday.
Barton, which defeated Indian Hills in PK's in the first matchup of the tiebreaker, faced a fresh SLCC team, which won a coin flip on Tuesday to advance to the final match of the qualifier. The freshness made a difference as Carles Zomeno scored an unassisted goal just 2:44 into the match to give SLCC a victory on a 'golden goal'.
Salt Lake will play Monroe College on Thursday in the semifinals, playing at 5:30 p.m. CST. The winner will advance to play the winner of a match between Arizona Western and Tyler in Saturday's NJCAA championship.
