Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (June 9, 2021) - The No. 2 Salt Lake Community College men's soccer team has advanced to play for an NJCAA national championship, thanks to a blowout win in Wednesday's NJCAA semifinals.
SLCC earned a dominating 4-0 win over Harcum at the Stryker Complex in Wichita, Kan., giving the Bruins the rare feat of having both the men's and women's soccer programs advancing to the national title match. Salt Lake also boosted its overall record to 15-1-1 with the victory.
"Our players performed at the highest level in tonight's win," said SLCC coach
Mark Davis. "I'm excited by how well our team has responded after falling in the opening match of this tournament. Tonight's win over Harcum showcased what our team is capable of."
It was all Salt Lake early, as
Samuel Owusu scored just 2:01 into the match to give the Bruins an early 1-0 lead.
Paul Richnow scored in the 31st minute to up the lead to 2-0 at intermission. Owusu provided another boost of momentum for SLCC to open the second half, scoring just 36 seconds into the period on a
Ryen Jiba assist.
Levonte Johnson scored on an unassisted goal minutes later to finish off the scoring burst.Â
The Bruins dominated the match offensively, earning a 16-5 edge in total shots. Bruins goalie
Christian Olivares also had a strong performance, posting three saves in the victory.
Salt Lake will now prepare for top-ranked Iowa Western, who advanced to the title match thanks to a 3-0 win over Iowa Lakes. Iowa Western is 16-0-2 on the season.
"While we're excited to play for a national title, we know we have a tall task ahead of us in Iowa Western," said Davis. "We will need to play our best to have a chance against a program of this caliber."
Thursday's NJCAA Division-I National Championship match will begin at 6:00 p.m. MDT.Â
