No. 2 SLCC Men’s Soccer claims NJCAA West District title

HERRIMAN, Utah (May 22, 2021) – The No. 2 Salt Lake Community College men's soccer team is headed to Wichita with an NJCAA District championship in tow.

SLCC is headed to the NJCAA Division-I Men's Soccer Championships, thanks to a 2-1 victory in Saturday's NJCAA West District championship match. The win stretches Salt Lake's overall record to 13-0-1, along with giving the Bruins their first-ever berth to the NJCAA tourney.

"I'm so proud of our team today," said SLCC coach Mark Davis. "They battled so hard to get to this point and we're so excited to go to the national tournament. We can't wait to get started on Monday and start preparing."

Salt Lake jumped out to an early lead in the match, thanks to Taimu Okiyoshi scoring a goal in the fifth minute on a Jacob Contreras assist.  Mason McRae upped the advantage to 2-0 in the 22nd minute on a Ryen Jiba assist. While Yavapai would come within a goal in the 63rd minute, SLCC's defense allowed the Bruins to prevail in the championship match.

SLCC held a 5-0 advantage in shots-on-goal in the match, in spite of Yavapai holding a 13-12 overall advantage in shots. Christian Olivares preserved the save.

Salt Lake will now advance to the NJCAA Division-I Men's Soccer Championships, which are scheduled for June 5-10 in Wichita, Kansas.
