Season ends for No. 12 SLCC Men's Basketball in overtime loss

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 19, 2021) - Thrill and agony are words that are all too familiar to sports fans when describing competition, with the context of how each word is used dependent upon the situation.

For a few brief moments, the No. 12 Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team felt nothing but thrill and elation, especially after Marvin Price scored on a last-second play to send the Bruins to overtime in the opening round of the NJCAA National Tournament against South Georgia State College. Unfortunately, the Bruins felt 'agony' moments later as SLCC suffered a 93-89 loss to finish their 2021 campaign.

Salt Lake trailed at halftime, 49-40, going on a second-half rally that saw them outscore South Georgia, 38-29, to head to overtime. With just seconds left, a missed shot attempt ricocheted around before SLCC's Marvin Price was able to recover and lay the ball in at the buzzer to send the Bruins to a hopeful overtime. However, South Georgia State took control in the overtime period, icing the game.

"When you go to the national tournament, you have to play well to win and advance and unfortunately we didn't play well tonight," said Bruins coach Kyle Taylor. "I'm proud of how we battled, fought and never quit. We forced overtime and scrapped along, but just didn't make enough shots and had too many turnovers."

SLCC's second-half comeback featured a flurry of back-and-forth plays, with Max Watson giving Salt Lake a 76-73 lead with 3:02 left. The two teams would trade blows until Price's last-second heroics in regulation.

Jay Allen-Tovar finished with a team-high 20 points, while Felix Lemetti posted 18 points. Marvin Price scored 14 points and Max Watson had 10 points. SLCC shot just 26.3 percent (10-of-38) from three-point range.

"We played really poorly the last five minutes of the first half," noted Taylor. "We had a ton of bad turnovers and they made shots. We turned an 11-point lead into a 9-point halftime deficit. (I give) credit to South Georgia State for the way they played, their energy and the shots they made. We didn't shoot it well, and we didn't capitalize and make plays when we had the chance to win the game. It was a tough way to end our season."

With the loss, Salt Lake's abbreviated 2021 season will end with an overall record of 20-5. The Bruins went 12-3 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play, falling in the Region 18 championship game.
