TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 5, 2021) – The No. 3 Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team stayed undefeated Friday, rolling to a strong win in the opening of a weekend tournament at home.
Â
The Bruins, hosting this weekend's 'Bruin Classic', picked up a 65-49Â win over Eastern Wyoming, moving to 6-0 on the young season. SLCC took a narrow 25-20 halftime lead and extended it with strong defense and timely offense in the second half.
"It's nice to get a win when you don't play very well offensively," said SLCC coach Kyle Taylor. "We talked about the keys to the game being defending the three-point line and dominating on the glass. Our guys were locked into those two keys and did a fantastic job. We out-rebounded them by 18 and only allowed three made three-point shots. That was the difference in the game."
James Lee led SLCC with 12 points, while
Bendji Pierre scored 10 points.
Jay Allen-Tovar finished with 8 points and 10 rebounds. The Bruin bigs dominated the paint, holding a 30-22 advantage in scoring and a 54-34 rebounding advantage.
"
Jay Allen-Tovar and
Samuel Keita dominated the interior and that was what we challenged them to do," said Taylor. "They both played terrific and embraced the game plan."
Â
Salt Lake will host the Utah All-Stars on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff inside the Lifetime Activities Center.
