No. 5 SLCC Men's Basketball closes weekend with big home win

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 31, 2021) - The No. 5 Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team finished a three games-in-three days swing with a strong non-conference victory on Sunday.

The Bruins picked up a 120-77 win over Community Christian College, returning home after sweeping through a tournament in Western Wyoming. Salt Lake's overall record now sits at 5-0 just two short weeks into the season.

Like Saturday's win over nationally-ranked Western Wyoming, the Bruins had a mixed start against CCC, with SLCC holding a narrow 52-48 lead at halftime. However, Salt Lake turned on the burners in the second half and outscored Community Christian, 68-29, in the half. SLCC started the half on a 12-2 run to key the rally.

Bruins coach Kyle Taylor said his team is consistently finding its way in the second half.

"We again needed a solid second half to pull away," he said. "In the first half, our press and traps weren't effective and we didn't sprint back. We switched defenses at halftime and played much better defense in the second half, forcing a total of 27 turnovers. We also did a nice job on the defensive glass limiting them to one shot."

Salt Lake was led individually by James Lee and Maks Klanjscek, who both finished with 16 points apiece. Other double-digit scorers included Bendji Pierre (15 points), Quincy McGriff (13 points), Samuel Keita (10 points) and Da'Vantre Vitor (10 points).

"A lot of guys contributed today," said Taylor. "I thought both Bendji and Maks played really well in both of their first starts of the season. Both were active, aggressive and made plays. James Lee was really good again, and Quincy, Samuel Keita and Da'Vantre all played well and got into double figures."

The Bruins will host their annual 'Bruin Classic' this weekend, opening with Eastern Wyoming on Friday.
