No. 8 SLCC Men's Basketball finishes first-ever perfect Scenic West season

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 22, 2020) - History was made by the No. 8 Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team on Saturday in Price.

For the first time in a rich school history, the Bruins have gone undefeated through their Scenic West Athletic Conference season, downing in-state foe USU Eastern by a score of 81-72 to finish the league schedule at 12-0. Salt Lake's overall record is now 26-4 with the win.

The Bruins jumped out on top early, holding a 44-29 halftime lead. SLCC's defense was sharp throughout the game, holding the Eagles to just 33.3 percent shooting in the first half and forcing 22 turnovers throughout the game. USU Eastern cut into the deficit consistently throughout the second half but Salt Lake's early lead helped the team power to the win.

SLCC coach Kyle Taylor said the feat of setting school history is a special moment for this year's Bruins.

"I'm really proud of what our players accomplished," he said. "It is so hard to beat teams home-and-away three different times, but our players found a way."

The Bruins had three different players score 14 points apiece - Asa McCord, Spencer Johnson and Matt Gray. Justice Hill and Jay Allen-Tovar both scored 12 points, while Christian Popoola finished with 11 points.

Taylor said the game was indicative of the consistent team effort the Bruins have shown all season.

"Tonight was a great team win," he said. "We shared the ball and took great care of the ball. We accomplished another goal but we have many more goals to still chase."

Salt Lake will enter next week's Region 18 tournament as the top overall seed. The Bruins will play their first game of the tournament on Friday.
