TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (August 30, 2019) - The Salt Lake Community College volleyball team understood the importance of extending its season-opening momentum in Friday's "Crystal 'Inn'vitational" and played accordingly.
The Bruins picked up a 3-0 win over Western Nebraska Community College inside the Lifetime Activities Center, earning set victories of 25-20, 25-22, 27-25. The win moves SLCC's overall record to 6-0.
In a match that went back-and-forth in spite of SLCC's set sweep, the Bruins held a narrow advantage in kills (37-33) and forced 18 WNCC errors throughout the match. The momentum of the third set consistently ebbed-and-flowed as SLCC led 23-21 before Western Nebraska went on a 3-0 run to hold a set point of 24-23. In spite of having a chance to extend the match, WNCC responded with a service error that got Salt Lake back in the match, with the Bruins winning on a
Sidney Frith service ace.
Gwen Russell and
Kenadee Christensen each led Salt Lake with 8 kills, while
Ariane Pola and
Kaitlynn Bradley had 7 kills apiece. Frith had 16 assists for SLCC, also leading the team with a pair of aces that included the match winner.Â
Salt Lake will play a pair of matches on Saturday to conclude the tournament, including an 11:00 a.m. match against Treasure Valley and a 5:00 p.m. match against Western Wyoming.Â
