TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 23, 2019) - One of the most successful seasons in the history of Salt Lake Community College softball has come to an end.
The Bruins fell in the one-loss bracket of the NJCAA tournament in St. George Thursday, falling 5-4 to Tyler Junior College in an elimination game. SLCC held a late lead but Tyler had a late scoring flurry to earn the win. Salt Lake's season ends with an overall record of 47-8.
SLCC held a 4-2 lead entering the seventh inning, needing just three outs to advance to another elimination game late Thursday evening at the Canyons Complex. Instead, Tyler's Brooke Makemson hit a three-run triple to give her team a lead they would never surrender. TJC took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but Salt Lake responded with a run in the third inning on a
Paige Reynolds sacrifice-fly to cut the deficit.
Arienn Ackerman tied the game in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice RBI, with Savannah Montoya giving the team a lead in the sixth inning on a sacrifice-fly RBI.
Tarni Stepto also contributed an RBI walk later in the inning.
Stepto finished the game going 2-of-2 at the plate and
Dayna Hokanson finished 2-of-4. Stepto also earned the pitching loss in the circle.
With the loss, Salt Lake ends the season as the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular-season champions and the Region 18 tournament champions. This was SLCC's first NJCAA appearance since the 2017 season.Â
