No. 20 Salt Lake falls at Southern Idaho

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 14, 2019) - The No. 20 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team had a disappointing Valentine's Day, falling in a crucial game at a league rival.

The Bruins fell to the College of Southern Idaho Thursday, losing 66-53 to fall to 21-5 overall and 7-3 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. The loss drops Salt Lake out of a tie for first-place in the league standings.

Southern Idaho controlled the game's tempo from the beginning, leading 24-12 at the end of the first quarter. Salt Lake would never lead in the game, with the Golden Eagles leading by as many as 19 points midway through the third quarter. The Bruins shot just 38.7 percent from the field in the game, making only 1-of-15 three-point attempts.

SLCC coach Betsy Specketer said the game was a struggle from the beginning.

"We got punched in the first quarter and really never recovered," she said. "We'll need to be a lot tougher, physically and mentally, for our game with Snow College on Saturday."

Lauren Gustin led Salt Lake with 19 points and 8 rebounds, while Miki'ala Maio also scored 14 points. Salt Lake had only 4 bench points in the game.

The Bruins will host their annual "Sophomore Night" on Saturday as they host Scenic West leader Snow College in a matchup for first place. The game will start at 3:00 p.m. inside the Lifetime Activities Center.
