No. 16 SLCC Volleyball falls in regular season finale

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 2, 2019) - The No. 16 Salt Lake Community College volleyball team fell in a regular-season finale on 'Sophomore Day' to a longtime regional rival Saturday.

The No. 16 Bruins were downed by defending NJCAA champion College of Southern Idaho inside the Lifetime Activities Center, falling 3-1 in the match (26-24, 30-32, 22-25, 21-25). The loss drops Salt Lake to 22-10 overall and 5-5 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

In a match that went back-and-forth throughout, the Bruins claimed a victory in the first set after breaking a 24-24 tie with consecutive points. In a nail-biting second set, Southern Idaho held a 24-23 lead before Salt Lake went to eventually claim a set point at 28-27. The Bruins were unable to capitalize and played on until leading 30-29 on a set point. Southern Idaho closed the set with 3 straight points. The third set was just as close as Salt Lake and CSI were tied at 22-22 late but the Golden Eagles again finished with a trio of points to claim the set.

Kenadee Christensen had a team-high 16 kills in the match, with Ariane Pola also contributing 11 kills. Bruna Correa led the team with 24 assists and Holland Vande Merwe finished with 27 kills.

Salt Lake will now await its opponent in next weekend's Region 18 championships at Snow College. Based on current standings, the Bruins will likely be the No. 4 seed playing No. 5 Colorado Northwestern in the first round on Friday.
