TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 1, 2019) - The No. 3 Salt Lake Community College men's soccer team will play for a region title on Saturday, thanks to a postseason victory Friday.
How the Bruins advanced to that opportunity came via a 3-2 win over USU Eastern in the semifinals of the Region 18 championships at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, a win that helps SLCC advance to the region championship match for the second consecutive year. The win lifts Salt Lake's overall record to 13-0-1.
SLCC finished red hot in the Friday semifinal, taking a 3-0 halftime lead to build an insurmountable advantage.
Omar Gomez scored early in the 11th minute to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
Azriel Johnson scored his first goal in the 19th minute on a
Ryen Jiba assist, helping SLCC to a 2-0 lead.
Dalton Gibson scored in the 31st minute to take a 3-0 lead.
USU Eastern came back to score a pair of goals in the second half, cutting the lead to 3-2 after a Hector Galena Cruz goal in the 84th minute. However, SLCC goalie
Isaac Roy held late to help the Bruins advance to Saturday's Region 18 final.
Salt Lake held a 14-7 advantage in overall shots, with a 7-4 edge in shots-on-goal. Roy made 2 saves in the match.
Samuel Owusu took a team-high 3 shots.
The Bruins will play in Saturday's Region 18 final at 11:00 a.m. at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman. Salt Lake will play the winner of a match between Snow College and Southern Nevada.
