SLCC Men's Soccer prepared to open conference play on Friday

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (September 3, 2018) - There has probably never been a better time to be associated with Salt Lake Community College men's soccer program.

The Bruins are riding high after starting the season on a five-match win streak, matches that have all featured strong offensive play and even better defense. Salt Lake holds a 21-0 scoring advantage over the last three matches, scoring 10 goals against Sheridan College Sunday without even allowing a shot. On top of the on-pitch success, the Bruins are enjoying the atmosphere of Zions Bank Stadium, marking them as the only Scenic West Athletic Conference program playing in a professional venue.

However, with as much preseason accolades and success as the Bruins have had (not to mention receiving votes in the NJCAA preseason polls), Salt Lake's focus is now on starting strong in SWAC play. The Bruins will open up their conference season this weekend on the road, with matches on Friday and Saturday at Colorado Northwestern Community College.

SLCC coach Mark Davis said his program is encouraged by the strong start to the season and is hoping to build upon its play this weekend in Colorado.

"By all accounts, we've had a very positive beginning to this 2018 season," he said. "While we continue to achieve marks and program-firsts, we are far from accomplishing our main goals as a program and will need to continue to improve along the way."

Colorado Northwestern should provide a good start for the Bruins to league play. CNCC is 0-2 to start the season, with results from a weekend tourney in Wyoming yet to be reported. While offensive success has been a hallmark of Salt Lake's young season, the Spartans are scoreless on the season.

Even with CNCC's struggles to open the season in mind, Davis said his program has no room to let up with game preparation and focus.

"Conference play requires a new level of focus and intensity, regardless of the opponent and their record," he said. "We will have to bring everything we have to be ready for this weekend, or we will be in a tough situation."

Friday's match at CNCC is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m., with Saturday's match at 1:00 p.m. Salt Lake will have its SWAC home opener at Zions Bank Stadium on Sept. 14, as the Bruins host in-state rival USU Eastern.
