TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (September 20, 2018) - The growth and development of the Salt Lake Community College men's soccer program has been measured, methodical and consistent.
From the beginning, the program was trying to lay the groundwork for competitive success and stability on a long-term basis. However, success is something that is hard to contain once its fire has been lit, as the Bruins are experiencing. The fire is on full display, with Salt Lake rising to No. 4 in the latest NJCAA polls.Â
SLCC coach
Mark Davis said he is impressed at how the program has risen.
"Building a program is always a fun process, and it's even more rewarding to see the program find success," said Davis, who is the coach of both the men's-and-women's programs. "However, success is all for naught if we aren't completely committed to taking that next step. There's no telling how high we can climb if we strive to consistently improve."
The chance for improvement comes in fine form this week, as the Bruins prepare to travel to No. 6 Snow College. The in-state battle, featuring two of the nation's top-ten junior college programs, will also feature the two programs who sit atop the Scenic West Athletic Conference. This gives the stakes of the matchup even more significance, with conference-and-national implications at stake.
"Our guys understand the importance of this week," said Davis. "We understand it won't make-or-break our season, but we also can see the importance of getting a lead on a strong program like Snow. They are well-coached, disciplined and opportunistic. We will have to play our best soccer to beat them."
Salt Lake has a goal differential of 44-1 over its last five matches. The Bruins have scored over ten goals on three separate occasions this season.
The Bruins and Snow will play a match on both Friday and Saturday, with Friday's match starting at 3:00 p.m. The programs will face off at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.Â
