TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (December 8, 2018) - When asked about the No. 10 Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team, Bruins coach
Todd Phillips will almost always mention how SLCC's success flows from a strong defensive effort.
While defense may be what Phillips looks for most, it's tough for any team in the NJCAAÂ to ignore Salt Lake's offensive ability, specifically as of late. The Bruins scored over 100 points for the sixth time Saturday, downing Green River College in a 125-103 shootout. The victory sends Salt Lake into its annual holiday break with an overall record of 11-2.Â
In a game where Salt Lake never trailed, offense ruled the day as the Bruins opened the game on a 10-2 run after an
Asa McCord layup to open the game. SLCCÂ led 68-36 at halftime, hitting 14 three-point shots. While Green River would outscore Salt Lake in the second half, 67-57, the Bruins earned the ultimate advantage due to a 34-15 edge in bench points.
In another impressive performance, St. John's commit
Cameron Mack finished with 32 points on 4-of-7 shooting from distance, while
Hunter Schofield posted 22 points.
Daron Henson, a Washington State commit, scored 15 points. McCord had 11 points and 10 rebounds to finish with the team's lone double-double. Seven different Bruins scored in double figures in the game.
The Bruins will play their next games in late December's Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout in Arizona, playing from Dec. 27-29 in the tourney. Salt Lake opens Scenic West Athletic Conference play on Jan. 5, with the Bruins hosting in-state rival Snow College on Jan. 12.Â
