TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 23, 2018) - The Salt Lake Community College volleyball program may have dropped to No. 7 in the latest NJCAA polls, but that doesn't mean the Bruins were sulking around.
No, the top team in the Scenic West Athletic Conference entered Bruin Arena with a fervor on Tuesday, as SLCC hosted Western Wyoming in a non-conference matchup that featured the program's annual "Sophomore Night." Salt Lake sent the program's sophomores out the right way in their last regular-season match in Taylorsville, powering to a 25-13, 25-18, 25-19 win. The win lifts SLCC's overall record to 26-2.
The Bruins controlled early and often in the match, limiting Western Wyoming to a hitting percentage of just .125. SLCC also posted a 46-25 advantage in kills, never trailing late in any of the sets.
Hellen Lacava led Salt Lake with 16 kills, while
Kayla Elliott posted 9 kills in her final regular-season home match.
Bruna Correa had 37 assists, while sophomore
Callie Whitney led the Bruins with 15 digs.
Salt Lake will travel to play Southern Idaho on Friday for the de-facto Scenic West championship, including rights to hosting next week's Region 18 championships. The match will start at 7:00 p.m., with live stats on www.csiathletics.com.
