TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (September 6, 2017) – With a 2-1-1 record behind them, the 16
th-ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruins men's soccer program is preparing for its SWAC opener against Colorado Northwestern Friday.
Â
The Bruins will play a pair of matches this weekend against the Spartans this weekend, with the first match scheduled for Friday at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's match will be played at 11:00 a.m.
Â
Last weekend saw a banner moment for the Bruins as they took third-ranked Iowa Western to a draw in a tourney hosted by Laramie County Community College. Now the program is looking for even higher heights as it prepares for its season-opener in SWAC play.
"We have played some very hard teams in preseason and I'm very happy on how we played those teams," SLCC coach
Mark Davis said. "I feel like we are ready for conference play and ready to get to the grind of things."
Â
The Bruins, who were ranked 20
th in the national preseason polls, will play several nationally-recognized programs over the next few weeks. Having already played 9th-ranked Yavapai (a 3-2 loss) and 18
th-ranked Laramie County (a 3-1 win), the Bruins will play back-to-back weekends against Snow College, who received preseason national votes, and Southern Nevada. The Coyotes were ranked 16
th in the national preseason rankings.
Â
However, for SLCC, it all starts with taking care of business in the SWAC opener against Colorado Northwestern.
Davis said he feels confident in his team's ability in preparation for league play.
"We have a very solid midfield and defense and we can create a lot of opportunities for ourselves," he said. "We are just trying to take it day-by-day."
