Hailing from Columbia, Missouri, Griffin Humphreys brings a proven record of building championship-level programs to Salt Lake Community College’s Cross Country team. A former captain at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, Humphreys transitioned seamlessly into collegiate coaching, earning a master’s degree in educational, school, and counseling psychology with an emphasis in positive coaching and athletic leadership from the University of Missouri.
From 2017 to 2022, Humphreys served as assistant coach at Portland State University, where he spearheaded a revival of the Vikings’ distance program. Under his leadership, Portland State athletes set 16 school records, earned 3 NCAA National Championship qualifications, 2 NCAA All-American honors, 2 Big Sky Conference records, and 2 Big Sky individual titles. His tenure also saw the men’s and women’s cross country programs achieve their best team finishes in both the Big Sky Conference and NCAA West Regional meets.
Following his success at Portland State, Humphreys coached with the Puma Elite Running Team and worked in operations for the University of Utah’s cross country and track & field programs. In addition, he serves as an athlete manager for Kimbia Athletics, representing Olympic medalists, world championship finalists, national champions, and national record holders.
Humphreys’ coaching philosophy blends a deep understanding of sport science with an athlete-first approach, fostering both competitive excellence and personal growth. His experience working with world-class athletes—including his wife, 2020 Olympic silver medalist Courtney Frerichs—brings an elite-level perspective to the Bruin program.
